At Frequency 2019, the task was to create a custom projection mapping for the Green Stage. The stage consisted of 500 individual square elements that were projected with 8x 20,000 lumen projectors. We recreated this stage design in 3D software to create a spatial illusion and manipulate the individual elements. This allowed us to create custom content where the individual elements move, rotate or collapse. These clips are rendered and played and mixed on location to match the music.
A particular challenge arose due to the time pressure. The number and arrangement of elements was roughly pre-planned, but would change again during the final setup. So we couldn’t create the content until the stage was already in place. That was 2 days before the festival started. By using a generative setup in the 3D program, we were able to prepare most of the content before the setup was final and replace it afterwards. This made it possible to finish everything on time.
This created a unique stage experience that could be clearly distinguished from a classical concert stage.
Bands and artists like UFO 361, Juice Wrld, Bullet for my Valentine, Prophets of Rage, Charlie XCX, Kodaline, The Offspring, and many more played on the stage.
